Magdeburg is located in the Elbe-Boerde-Heide and is the
main town of Sachsen- Anhalt.
It is also the centre of trade and economy in the area. Magdeburg has a
wealth of culture and history, dating back about 1200 years.
It is a large inland port, an industrial center, and a rail and road
junction. Manufactures include metal products, textiles, and chemicals.
The city is a food processing center, primarily in sugar refining and
flour milling. There are lignite and potash mines nearby.
It
has a busy arts scene. One of its most popular attractions is the
Elbauenpark on the river, with the tallest wooden tower in the world,
the Millennium Tower. The tower contains an exhibition on 6000 years of
human development. Cathedral Square, with its Gothic church surrounded
by Baroque buildings, stands at the heart of the old city centre, with
the Old Market Square (site of the Magdeburg Knight
monument)
and the Town Hall.
There are
many interesting sights to see, such as the gothic
cathedral - which has been the symbol for Magdeburg for centuries, the
monastery "Unserer Lieben Frau" and numerous technical monuments.
Magdeburg has been strongly influenced by many famous engineers and
inventors who have lived and worked in the town. The 25th
German Garden show took place in Magdeburg in 1999. A beautiful area was
landscaped and cultivated for the show and can now be enjoyed by
visitors during a long walk.
In 2002, Magdeburg commemorated the
400th birthday of Otto von Guericke
(1602 - 1686). Guericke, inventor of the air pump, is renowned for his
world-famous Magdeburg experiments such as the famous hemisphere
experiment.
