The old city of Münster is at the start of the 21st century still attractive and quite lively. Despite the destructions (90% of the old town) of World War II,  it has managed to preserve the charming character of its medieval city centre. Münster still retains some of its medieval character. Its historical buildings include the cathedral (13th cent.), the Lambertikirche (14th–15th cent.), the Liebfrauenkirche (14th cent.), and several other churches, in addition to a baroque Residenzschloss (Residential Palace) (1767–73), a Gothic city hall (14th cent.), and several gabled houses.

The history of the city started actually with the establishment of a bishopric in the 9th century. Today, Münster is still an episcapoal seat. Furthermore, Münster's Westfälische Wilhelmsuniverstität (University), which was founded in 1773 is one of Germany's largest universities.

Among the interesting museums are : the Westphalian state museum and the recently opened Graphik Museum Picasso with works from the master.
