All motorway traffic into Munich ends on the Mittlerer Ring (Middle Circular Road), and tailbacks or even ‘Stau’ (stationary traffic) is almost inevitable. The Mittlerer Ring is the wider equivalent of the Altstadtring (Inner Ring), which circles the city centre. On the Nürnberg highway, exit Fröttmaning, you will find a practical Park&Ride parking lot with a subway connection. You are advised to forego the use of your vehicle for the duration of your stay, as finding a parking-slot is a perenially insoluble problem. Almost all parking spaces in the city centre are for a limited period only and cost € 2,50 EURO per hour.

Air traffic arrives at the Franz-Josef-Strauss airport near Freising (air travel info: Tel. 97521313). Distance to the city centre: 30 km. Various hotels in Munich’s surrounds have meanwhile organised a pick-up shuttle service from airport to hotel. So inform yourself when you book!

If you are not being picked up, you can take a cab to the city centre. At about 50 EURO, this is the most expensive option. Catching a bus is cheaper. These leave every 20 minutes, from 6.28am to 9.48 pm, and charge € 9,50 EURO for a one-way trajectory, 14,50 EURO for a two-way trajectory. To locate departure points from air terminals 1 and 2, also from the Zentralbereich (Central Area), follow the ‘Linienbus’ signposting. S-Bahn trains avoid all the traffic jams, and the station is below ground, under the Zentralbereich. S-1 trains travel by way of München-Laim, S-8 ones by way of München-Ost (East). Trains leave every 10 minutes. Fare: € 8,40 EURO. When returning to the airport by S-Bahn, remember to board the last carriage, since the train is split up somewhere along the line.
